The Amsterdam Dam Palace was built in the 17th century. It was built as a city hall for a century and a half. The palace was constructed out of white stone, but because of weathering it no longer remained white and it was famous for its rich and impressive decorations.
In 1808, Louis Napoleon took control of the city hall and made it into a royal palace.
